Blogging can be a journey into the unknown. Aside from a few very well-publicized exceptions, blogging has been a matter of trial and error as was recently alluded to on Source Blogger: A Blogger’s Confession: I Murdered My Blog!
The typical blog may 2-3 years of continous marketing and promotion to acquire any type of realistic following. With the average blog shutting down in a matter of months, doesn't it make you wonder...why?
One reason may be the minuscule earnings. I think we've all heard testimony from other bloggers about their pursuit of monetary reward online only to come away with pocket change? Is this your story too?
At Source Blogger, we want you to be a better, more-successful blogger - and we want you to be (well) compensated in the process. If you are new to blogging, say, in the last year or so, it has been a tough for all of us to increase our earnings. So, you are not alone. The only difference is that some of us have implemented more creative methods to earn online revenue.
This may include multiple blogs, affiliate sites, reseller sites, e-commerce sites, etc...whatever it takes!
"Source Blogger, I like Google AdSense"
We like it too. And I am sorry if you thought that AdSense was the first and last thing you had to do to monetize your blog.
Many webmasters claim to make hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a month with AdSense. Would you like to have those type of earnings? Of course you would!
If you have time, I'd like to share Source Blogger's secrets for using AdSense.
"Source Blogger, you're cool and everything...but, um, you don't have any AdSense on here!"
That was a brilliant observation. Source Blogger was not created to be an AdSense blog. Although we did sneak a strip of AdBrite 728x90 Leaderboard at the bottom of the page. (Scroll Down)
We do use AdSense on our other blogs. We have a network of blogs that discuss the Stock Market, Economics, Politics, Accounting/Finance, Chess, and Small Business. (Are you yawning yet?) Laughs!
The point is that those blogs have extremely targeted keywords and have traditionally made a decent return for us with AdSense.
"Source Blogger, for me, AdSense is a waste of time!"
Do you know why you don't make money with AdSense? It's because you have never consulted with a professional who can provide you an advantage over other webmasters.
If you have a few minutes, I'd love to provide you with methods of increasing your AdSense earnings.
What are you doing? Get your hand of your wallet! You don't have to buy anything. No e-book, no "money-making system" newsletter, or expensive seminar. You are our guest.
Don't take our word for it. Go look around. We are confident you will return. Although the category niche of blog optimization/blog marketing and promotion/SEO is extremely competitive, there are no other sites even remotely similar to Source Blogger.
With the love and support of the Source Blogger community, we will not stop until we are the #1 blog on the internet. Is that too lofty a goal? Are our expectations too high? Each day, we're winning the hearts and minds of a handful of new bloggers. The Source Blogger community is growing. It was a flight to quality that brought them here. Will you let us prove it to you? What will it take to convince you? You too can become a member of the Source Blogger community. All it takes is a simple subscription. Then, sit back and let us amaze you. We don't just want to be one of your favorite blogs. We want to knock your socks off!
OK, well learn us start by getting back to AdSense, shall we?
So, your site is equipped with AdSense; but, so are millions of other sites. If you haven't been successful this far, with your current AdSense strategy, why do you keep doing the same thing?
Even with more traffic, your revenue is still remaining at a few pennies a day, isn't it?
1) Do your AdSense ads match the color palette of your blog?
Your Adsense ad should have 0% deviation from your sites colors. Whoever told you that your ad should contrast with your site's color code cost you a lot of AdSense commissions! Your ads should be undetectable from the rest of your site. This includes the ad frame and the Ad background.
Confused? Let me give you an example:
More? Here's another example:
Do you think in those two prior examples those site owners are generating more Adsense earnings than you? Why or Why not?
Look at this one:
Look at the AdSense header Ads. Nice, huh? The orange in the Ads compliment the post titles and the site's title.
2) Experiment with different Ad sizes:
Unfortunately, traffic has become immuned to 468x60 banners and 728x90 leaderboards.
Even, the graphical Ad, also known as image Ad, is slowly moving in this direction:
3) Where should I place Ads on my pages?
The best location for Google Ads varies from page to page, depending on content. Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering where to position your ads:
- What is the user trying to accomplish by visiting my site?
- What do they do when viewing a particular page?
- Where is their attention likely to be focused?
- How can I integrate ads into this area without getting in the users' way?
- How can I keep the page looking clean, uncluttered and inviting?
Let's see what Google thinks are some locations on your blog to place ads:
4) How can I determine what parts of my page are most attractive to viewers?
You may think visitors are carefully reading every word on your home page. But they're not! People glance at a fragment here, a fragment there, and decide within a matter of seconds whether to stay or leave.
You may think visitors are carefully reading every word on your home page. But they're not! People glance at a fragment here, a fragment there, and decide within a matter of seconds whether to stay or leave.
Companies actually pay hundreds of dollars to learn your eye tracking patterns once you hit a landing page. This is what an actual heat map looks like - areas of the tested Web page that are in red were viewed by 100 percent of the visitors in the study. Areas in green were viewed by 50 percent of visitors, and areas in dark blue were viewed by almost no one.
Ok, class, we'll stop there. I know, I know, it's a lot of new information to absorb in one sitting. But, I hope you got something out of that.

Thanks for the great informative post. One thing also to remember with adsense is to think beforhand about the keywords to use in the page. Keywords matter a lot to make the ad clicks be worth more.
I have also written an article about adsense optimization for blogs: http://blogidy.com/2009/11/adsense-optimization-for-blogs/ Hope you like it.
Hello Bloggeri of Blogidy.com,
Due to size limitations, we decided to push the remaining portion of this article, which starts off with an intensive coverage on keywords, for the next post entitled: "The Secret of Making Money With AdSense - Revealed!"
We hope you find part II of this series just as informative and entertaining!
One more thing, when commenting on a great, "DoFollow" blog like Source Blogger, feel free to use your HREF tags (<a href=) to encompass your links inside your comment.
We did read your article. Thank you for leaving that for us and the rest of the Source Blogger community.
We are also following you on Twitter.
Your good friend,

I am surprised to find a blog about monetizing blogs that doesn't claim to make you rich in 4 minutes with Adsense. Very well written as well!
@ David James,
(Source Blogger runs back and quietly deletes the post about "Getting Rich With AdSense in 5 Minutes or Less!")
(Laughs!) Kidding...
You are so right though. It's difficult to discuss any serious strategies for blog monetization without getting dismissed along with the rest of the "get rich quick" internet spammers, er, ah marketers.

Hey SourceBlogger, Another great article this time on adsense. One of the great mysteries of blogging and that is how to optimize our adsense earnings. I think you hit upon a lot of the key points of adsense & the workings of google. I would also tell any newbies not to believe all the hype of those guru's who tell you that they have a formula on how some Dr. made thousands of dollars in one month's time and HE can help YOU for only this amount of money & he'll send you a cd. Yes there was a doctor I guess from what I've read who had figured out a way to make a couple of large checks from Google, but I haven't heard much about him lately. I think we have to be patient and really study the things that you mentioned, ie. the map location of where we are putting our ads. Thanks for the info. and will be back for the rest of the lesson. Happy Holidays to you all. jj
Adwords need to be very specific to work. They can be good for 'niche' areas but I've heard that they don't seem to help at all for more common blogging subjects.
Hi there - a useful post. Will try and implement some changes to my site and see what happens...
Glen
